Athletics team efforts built on resilience and perseverance

On Friday 24th January  9 Y6 boys and 9 Y6 girls were selected to compete at the Borough Indoor Athletics Tournament, which was held at Canons Leisure Centre in Mitcham.  Nothing could have prepared the children for the ‘all eyes on you’ which was intensified by Poplar starting every event and being in lane 1 - closest to the spectators. They needed to focus completely on the task and do the best they could in their given event.  Even a small wobble at the start, largely fuelled by nerves, didn’t have a lasting impact and their performances went from strength to strength; they started to win in their events, coming first in the 6 lap relay, the 2 x 2 relay... and in the track events they excelled!  As the morning went on, the atmosphere buzzed, inspiring the athletes as they began to enjoy the competition and revel in their success. Despite tracking the scores, it was difficult to know for sure how well the Poplar team had done.  Finally, the nerve wracking announcement of the day: who had won first, second and third places? On tenterhooks and holding our breath, we waited...’Silver goes to Poplar!’ A huge cheer erupted from the team along with leaps, hugs, fist pumps and whoops of joy!  It was an excellent team effort built on resilience and perseverance, showcasing our school values! Well done to each and every one of you; you did amazingly well and your efforts were greatly rewarded!
