Cricket and Basketball News Update

On Tuesday 21st May, eight children from year 4 and 5 headed out to represent the school at the Raynes Park Cluster Cricket Competition. We didn’t get off to the best of starts, losing our first game by only 6 runs. However, that put gave us the push we needed to re-think our game plans and settle our nerves. We then went on to win our next two games very convincingly.

Although we batted well and took some great wickets and catches in the field, we narrowly lost our last game. This put us in joint 2nd position. We needed Hillcross to win their last game, but not score so many runs. Our prayers were answered and we finished 2nd in our pool. We will now go on to represent the school at the Borough Finals on 14th June.

In that same week we had two teams representing the school at the Basketball Borough Finals. With our year 6 teams only just arriving back from their residential trip the night before we knew we would have some tired players. However, the children turned up all raring to go. Both teams got off to great starts and finished in the top 2 of their pools. This meant that they were now both playing for overall finishing spots of 1st to 8th. The A team won there quarter finals, but the B team lost to an amazing St Teresa's team. The B team went on to win their semi-final and final, to give them an overall finishing position of 5th place. Our A team lost to the unstoppable St Teresa's in their semi-final and were now playing in the 3rd or 4th place final. The game was tight and close fought with both teams scoring 2 baskets each after the full time whistle. Time for a shoot out….. it was tense and nerves were high but we did not let the pressure get to us, scoring 2 of the 3 penalties. A win for Poplar with the team picking up the Bronze medals!

Well done to everyone involved. The children have all been working hard at after school club sessions to gain more knowledge of the sports and improve on their skills. This has really shown that their hard work has paid off.
